Bites of My Life

I'll be honest, I'm putting together this post as fast as I can so I can get my eyes off the computer. It's currently Sunday night, I'm laying on my couch with my computer on my stomach, the Emmy's in the background and a raging migraine in my head. This little sucker arrived around lunchtime and has yet to leave. What a way to end a week.
On the brighter side, it was a great week. Two new restaurants crossed off my list, a little birthday celebration for my Lindz, and lots of feelings of fall. Not pictured is the incredible new yoga classes I got to try, a softball win for the work crew and the much needed rainy Sunday we had.
-Just one part of our amazing meal at OKC's newest spot.
-Everything A Good Egg Dining touches is gold.
-Late night appetizer dinner.
-Latte a day keeps the doctor away.
-I really wish I wasn't that person, but I am.
-Checked another new spot off my list. Must try the cubans from Cafe Condesa.
-No monkeying around. Tucking this recipe away to save for another day.
-Breakfast tailgates FTW.
-Sunday supper in front of the TV to wind down before a new week.

The Locations, The People, and The Drama Are Real

Name that reality show. Ever since middle school when I started watching LC on Laguna Beach it's been my dream to go visit the coastal town. Eight years later and mom and pop made my vacation dreams come true. We were actually in Newport Beach just north of Laguna. To my surprise I liked it even better than Laguna!

Since the trip I've been watching Laguna Beach and Newport Harbor trying to pick up on more spots I may recognize now. Mom too! I loaded up on episodes for us to watch on the plane ride home. I may or may not have bought a shirt at Laguna Surf & Sport....come on I had to support Stephen's old place of work. If you are ever taking a trip to either, consult me. Mom, dad and I all agreed we did it just right. We were there the perfect amount of town, visited each important area, got just enough beach and pool time and hit up all the best restaurants.

Started the trip on a sweet note with donuts from Roses. Seriously amazing maple old fashioned.

The perfect fuel for our bike ride all up and down Balboa Peninsula.

Took the ferry over the harbor for some more exploring. Got a frozen banana from, a staple for any trip to Balboa apparently.

Headed back into Newport to get the tuna and salmon poke from Bear Flag Fish Co.

Spent the rest of the day by the pool with a mojito in hand!

Amazing dinner at Javier's! I'm talking lobster enchiladas!!

Morning walk at Crystal Cove to walk off all the chips and salsa.

The whole Crystal Cove beach area had this 1950's Gilligan's Island feel to it, we loved it.

Suckered dad into a healthy breakfast after our walk. This pink smoothie was all his decision.

I got a pink breakfast too, but went with the Pitaya bowl from Nekter. Recreating asap.

Healthy breakfast was squashed after this, but lunch at Ruby's Shake Shack on the beach was no question.

Dinner at The Beachcomber while the sun is setting is pretty hard to beat.

And to think I'm not a beach person...

With recommendations, we found ourselves the next morning at the most perfect breakfast spot.

Zinc Cafe and Market was giving me all kinds of inspiro for the kind of place I'd love to open someday.

Our orders were delivered and I immediately pulled out my phone. My parents were very patient with my food pictures this trip.

The streets don't look like this in Oklahoma.

Spent all Saturday popping around Laguna. Unfortunately no Kristen, Stephen or LC sightings. Dinner at 230 Forest Avenue made up for it. Those are oysters with pomegranate granita btw.

My cioppino was just a take a bite picture waiting to happen.

Full to our necks, but gelato was a must for our last night of the trip.

Zinc day two because I was so obsessed. Who else has always wanted to eat an egg like this? Stinking cute.

Finally one last bite of the trip at Bear Flag. A repeat restaurant stop because it was that good too. Fish tacos this time and amazing pico and chips. I got hooked on Have'A chips at home little to know they are made right here in Laguna!

Props to mom and dad for being the best travel partners and props to southern California for stealing my heart. Good thing we all agreed we must go back next summer, oops!

Bites of My Life

bites-61.jpg
Today marks the last week in the wonderful world that is D.C. My next bites post will take place from my bed, in Norman, because the moment I get home I head straight back to school to start recruitment. It's been an amazing summer that has gone by way too quickly, but i'll leave the sappy reminiscing for another post.
As for last week, it felt long, but quick. It was filled with little random surprises that made for a great week!
-Dinner Monday night at Teddy and The Bully Bar (highly recommend) with Anna and a sweet Virginia based Beta Theta Kappa! We had amazing appetizers, I had the duck entree, and we finished it off with the s'mores sundae!
-I fall in love with a new Georgetown house everyday.
-My fellow SCOUTern Caroline kills it with her shoes everyday. I've started to look forward to each work day, anticipating what she will have on!
-A surprise visit from Stacia while she was around the area on a business trip with her internship! We had the best dinner catching up at Kafe Leopold (see my review here).
-Awesome Seared Tuna Salad at El Centro.. My boss took the interns here for lunch on Friday! I was happy to absorb all of her wisdom while also getting to cross one of the restaurants off my list.
-Sister Kathleen got in Friday evening! We headed straight to Churchkey for a drink before our wonderful dinner at Birch and Barley. Churchkey is a beer bar located right above B&B! I was recommended the Bacon beer, so I ordered it and loved it. You read that right, bacon. I loved it. Kathleen, Jillian and Anna, not so much.
-The cutest engagement party being set up while we grabbed a drink before dinner. It was too cute I had to sneak a pic.
-The amaze bread board at Birch and Barley. I didn't get many pics of the food because I dug in too quickly. B&B may be my new favorite restaurant.
-So fun taking Kat to b3dc! Obnoxious in our matching tanks, but we just had too.
-Hippie Crack and coffee at Baked and Wired after Barre. It's called crack for a reason....
-Cava Grill for Saturday lunch. This Mediterranean style Chipotle is absolutely amazing. I got the rice bowl with half falafel, half lamb sliders, topped with pickled red onion, crazy feta, harissa, banana peppers, kalamata olives,  tomatoes and thaini vinaigrette. Paired with a raspberry ginger tea.
-Union Market is one of my favorite weekend spots.  It just so happened DC Scoops, an ice cream event happened to be going on at the market. You could sample all kinds of ice cream for free then purchase your favorite. I may have had a slight run in with some peanut butter, but all turned out okay and I washed it down with a pistachio ice cream cone.
-Gourmet almond butter flavors at Salt and Sundry inside Union Market.
-The biscuits and cinnamon rolls were without a doubt the best part of Farmers Fishers Bakers brunch. See the rest of my meal via instagram.
-A super casual Sunday dinner a la Shophouse in the dorm. The night consisted of winding down from the weekend with takeout and Mary Kate and Ashley movies before Kathleen had to leave.

Eat for a Living

In the swirly twirly world of constant "What are you going to do after you graduate?" questions, I've been doing lots of thinking. I've landed on what will probably never be my job, but what I can hope and imagine my dream job being like. This is an ever changing answer in my book, but If you were to ask me today what my dream job would be, it would be a restaurant reviewer.
I imagine it looking something like this. Spending night after night, getting dressed up, going to nice restaurants and getting paid to eat free food and write a review on it. Today I am going to play the role of my dream job and do a little restaurant review for you.
Liptauer Crostini
Traditional Austrian cheese spread on toast points with chopped salad of peas & fava beans
Wednesday night I finally ate at Kafe Leopold. This restaurant is right around the corner from my office and down the adorable Cady's Alley. It had been on my list all summer and when we got a surprise visitor from sweet Stacia who was in town on a business trip, I knew it was the spot I wanted to take her!

Rostbraten vom Angusrind
Marinated Black Angus hangar steak, onion marmalade, parsley garlic butter, herb frites
Leopold's is known for their European flair food. They have a beautiful clean-lined interior and quaint outside patio dining. I tried going for brunch once, but it was packed. This is definite a breakfast/lunch/brunch spot but I think it still succeeded at night!
Tartine
Serrano ham, olive bread, melted mozzarella, wild mushroom and herb jus
Once arriving the three of us sat down. We were seated right next to the massive and extremely tempting case of French pastries. It was hard to not get distracted by them.
Of course I had done my research before going, but I hadn't settled on what I wanted. After looking over the menu, we started with a crostini, Anna got the steak frites, Stacia went with the tartine and I order the pizzetta!

Lachspizzetta
Smoked salmon β€œpizzette”, horseradish crΓ¨me, herb salad
Liptauer Crostini: The crostini came out much different, but much better than expected. The chopped salad on top of the crostini was tossed with an olive oil vinaigrette, peas and fava beans. It was very light and had a surprise of flavors.
Rostbraten vom Angusrind (Steak Frites): My frenchie friend Anna ordered the traditional Steak Frites. She luckily got full fast, so Stacia and I gladly sampled her steak and finished off the herb fries. The steak was cooked to medium rare perfection and the fries were the perfect crispiness. The onion marmalade garnish was very potent, but good with a little bite of steak.
Tartine: When Stacia's tartine came out we were shocked by the pile of mushrooms we saw. Shocked but not mad about it. This open face sandwich was topped with thinly sliced ham, thick mozzarella, and covered in deliciously flavorful mushrooms. She (we) was very pleased.
Lachspizzetta: Smoked salmon is still a staple in my summer diet and my eye tends to go straight to any dish containing it on a menu. The crust reminded me of a European tostada almost. It was thin like a tortilla, but slightly crispy from the grill. It was topped with grilled squash and zucchini, salmon, pickled red onions and the most delicious horseradish cream. It was full of flavor and I was very pleased.
Our evening at Leopold's was wonderful. Despite the amazing desserts staring us in the face, we passed by so I could take Stacia to my favorite ice cream spot on the way home!
Now if only someone could pay me to write posts like this. I'll keep dreaming for now.

D.C. Diary Part III

The third installment of D.C. Diary starts now. Take a tour through my world as I travel to NYC, celebrate the 4th of July and entertain you with my obsessive food pictures.

The donuts were practically forced upon us after finishing our entrees at Matchbox. After taking one bite of the orange scented donuts with kaluha and cream dipping sauce, I knew why our waiter was being so pushy.

Feeling all cool and popular inside when my fav DC foodgrammer reposted my Farmers Fishers Bakers oatmeal pic.

Pre-New York meal at Roti. The Chipotle styled restaurant with Mediterranean flair is right across from our dorm and way too delicious. I've decided I'm going to become a franchiser, so I can just bring all of my favorite DC restaurants back to Oklahoma with me.

My colorful plate consisted of chicken roti, falafel, eggplant, pickled onions, cous cous, tomatoes, red curry sauce, hummus all on a bed of lettuce.

My first love is DC, but my absolute/all time/can't beat it, favorite place is in New York. Got off the the bus in the big city and made a b-line to Milk Bar East Village for cereal milk soft serve with crunch and an iced coffee with cereal milk.

PS450 was brunch like never before. Music blaring, lights dimming, beads hanging everywhere it was insane but way too fun. My chilaquiles consisted of shredded chicken, queso fresco, pico de gallo, and crushed tortilla chips all topped with an egg. Other popular dishes on the table were the smoked salmon eggs Benedict, s'mores french toast and BEC french toast meaning bacon, egg, and cheese.

Our New York clan for the weekend.

Post brunch was a long leisurely walk to the Highline Standard hotel. The white and black with fresh greens and pops of yellow really striked my fancy.

Dining al fresco, nothing better.

Date night with my Kappa twin at the chic General Assembly was fresh ricotta dip to start and citrus halibut for dinner.

Best weekend with my girl.

Wondering around the west village by myself before meeting Claire and Mike for brunch.

Soft scrambled eggs and smoked salmon at The Dutch.

Shrimp fried rice, brunch style. Thanks Claire and Mike for my belated birthday brunch!

I've actually never had one of these strawberry shortcake ice cream pops until now. It was the perfect treat to cool off with in Central Park before heading back to D.C.

New York had me fooled and made me think I loved it more, but being back in the district, I'm thinking more straight.

A scoop of green tea and a scoop of snickerdoodle cookie dough ice cream for a walk around Georgetown on a Monday night.

Kimchi Ramen from Toki Underground, but delivered to the dorm. In order to avoid the hour long lines, we ordered take-out 24 hours in advance. My first ramen, and it was totally worth it.

A delicious lunch treated by our boss with my fellow interns at Malmaison. I got the avocado, corn and tomato salad. The cobb and smoked salmon salad were also ordered. Mine was amazing but I am still wanting to go back for the cantaloupe and tomato salad.

Brain Food Friday at work was brought to us c/o Sweet Green!

This was my second time at Cava Mezze, but my first time for dinner. The first time was for Father's day brunch where we feasted on tapas sized plates of gyro hash and lamb benedict. Sydney and I went on a date here after Jazz in the Garden for one of her lasts meals. You start with warm pita, olives, harissa and oils, then we ordered the spicy lamb meatballs, the zucchini fritters, cheese dumplings and the chicken souvlaki.

We then opted for dessert wine, coffee, apple pie and chocolate mousse for a girl's night instead of going out.

Le Diplomate! Anna is rubbing off on me and has me on a Frenchie kick!

Not a traditional French dish, but they know how to make some mac and cheese.

A cappuccino to start.

And the mushroom tart to finish. I still dream of that mushroom tart.

Every dish was beautiful, including Anna's salmon tartine.

First time at a pool all summer, although after a little 'incident' no one was allowed in the pool for the rest of the day. Ahhh the joys of public pools.

The Jefferson by night.

The Washington Monument and D.C. all lit up!

The oreo and nutella donut from GBD. So worth I don't even care that I'm posting a picture of me shoving it in my mouth, or shall I say, taking a bite?

Ted's Bulletin is the sweetest little diner restaurant on Capitol Hill. It was high on our list, mainly because of the homemade pop tarts. They use newspapers for menus and have old movies playing on the big screen in the main dining area.

Of course I instagrammed the food, and then it also got regrammed by @dcdining

I purchased some fresh figs at Whole Foods, but then had no idea what to do with them. This was the most delicious and pretty little dinner I have ever whipped up. Recipe here.

Lemonade and pistachio Pinkberry topped with dark chocolate crunches, granola and raspberries.

I often catch myself snapping pics of Georgetown on my walk to or from work. The colors and the quaintness gets me every day.

Every corner of the Georgetown neighborhood streets has the most breathtaking brownstones and greenery.

Kate and Melissa finally got in town for the 4th after spending the night in the Chicago Airport because of Hurricane Arthur. Our first dinner was at Farmers Fishers Bakers because I can't get enough.

We did table side guac, pretzel rolls, and this wasn't mine, but I was eyeing the prosciutto and fig pizza all night.

It didn't photograph well, but it's one of the best salads ever. The corn cake ranchero salad rivals my go to, fried brussels sprout salad.

Two best gal pals finally made it!

Salmon scramble round 2 for a 4th of July brunch at Kramer's in Dupont.

Take a freaking bite. Hot dogs on the fourth are a necessity.

Good Stuff round three while new visitors where in town. A bunless steakhouse burger so I could un-guiltfully enjoy a hefty portion of village fries.

Not, just, a shake. The whipped cream Good Stuff tops their shakes with is so thick it's like a scoop of ice cream.

Barbecue burger, village fries (sea salt, rosemary and thyme), oreo shake and toasted marshmallow shake all in view.

Stuffed and feeling good after Mel and Kate's first Good Stuff Eatery experience.

Made the hike to  La Colombe for breakfast after sending Kate and Melissa off! The hemp milk latte and pistachio morning roll did the trick.

Peek-a-boo white house. My view all the way down 16th St. in Logan Circle.

After trying Ted's Bulletin on Capitol Hill for brunch, we opted for the 14th street location for dinner. Look at all those homemade pop tarts, snowballs, donuts and scones.

This one has the same 50s soda fountain feel, but slightly more modern and fancy.

Just because I was there for dinner didn't mean I wasn't going to get a pop tart.

The parisian chic interior of Malmaison. Same place where I got my avocado, corn tomato salad. This time I was just getting coffee which I must admit was very marginal, but the ambience of this place gets me every time.

That's all for now with my D.C. updates. Only about two weeks left:(
